about

Four years ago today, we spent our last night in Australia, having performed one show of a two-week tour, and then having the rest of our it cancelled. We flew home on a Sunday; sixteen hours in the air at five hundred miles an hour to get to LAX. In the row in front of us, a coughing woman in a mask. Another flight to Houston, and a three and a half hour drive later, we were home. The quiet set in amongst the unknown and the anxiety, and we were suddenly thrust into a new world on our Louisiana back porch. We realize now that in times of intense uncertainty throughout history, we as humans turn to story for comfort, assurance, and direction. We wrote Once Upon a Time in the quiet, feeling helpless and scared, and searching for safety and truth.

lyrics

Tell me that story again darlin’
The one where we all end up alright
Tell me that story again darlin’
Wasn’t it true once upon a time?
Wasn’t it true once upon a time?

I’ll keep keeping up with the laundry
You’ll keep keeping up with the car
I guess things aren’t really changing here
It sure feels like they are
It sure feels like they are

We’ve got good dogs, we’ve got a good porch
We’ve got eyes to see and we’ve got a good view
We’ve got ears to hear and we are listening
The truth is not something we can choose
The truth is not something we can choose

Tell me that story again darlin’
The one where we all end up alright
Tell me that story again darlin’
Wasn’t it true once upon a time?
Wasn’t it true once upon a time?
